{"id":98,"date":"2015-08-24T15:34:42","date_gmt":"2015-08-24T19:34:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sharett.org\/?p=98"},"modified":"2024-04-02T20:43:15","modified_gmt":"2024-04-03T00:43:15","slug":"random-vacations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sharett.org\/?p=98","title":{"rendered":"Random vacations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The other day my friend Barry and I went on a walk.\u00a0 At each intersection we flipped a coin.\u00a0 Heads meant we continued straight.\u00a0 Tails then we flipped again, and then heads was left, tails was right.<\/p>\n<p>Later that evening a group of friends brainstormed taking random vacations:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_99\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharett.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Maine-zip-code-map.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-99\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sharett.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Maine-zip-code-map-225x300.png\" alt=\"Taken from http:\/\/www.aboutzipcode.com\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sharett.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Maine-zip-code-map-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/www.sharett.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Maine-zip-code-map-768x1024.png 768w, https:\/\/www.sharett.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Maine-zip-code-map-624x832.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-99\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taken from http:\/\/www.aboutzipcode.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ol>\n<li>Zip codes.\u00a0 Roll up to 5 numbers on a ten-sided die (or 9 or 11 numbers depending on how precise you want to be!), and plan a vacation to that zip code.\u00a0 It might be Smith College (01063), the Northampton Post Office Boxes (01061), Ketichan, AK (99950) or the IRS office in Holtsville, NY (00501)!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amtrak.com\">Amtrak<\/a> stations.\u00a0 Pick a random one and travel by train.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/us.megabus.com\">Megabus<\/a>.\u00a0 Set a dollar amount you are willing to pay, and figure out the farthest you can travel on Megabus for that amount.\u00a0 Someone should write a program to help figure this out.\u00a0 $25 can take you pretty far if you book in advance.<\/li>\n<li>Hitchhiking without a destination in mind.\u00a0 Just go wherever the rides you get are going!<\/li>\n<li>Follow the wind.\u00a0 Take a bicycle trip (or sailboat) and always go downwind as much as possible.\u00a0 Or upwind if you want a challenge.<\/li>\n<li>Follow the money.\u00a0 Offer your labor to everyone around you and do or go to whomever will pay you the most.\u00a0 Or least.\u00a0 You get to decide what your limits are &#8211; legal or illegal.<\/li>\n<li>Follow an animal&#8217;s tracks.\u00a0 Once I followed a moose&#8217;s tracks in the snow for hours.\u00a0 They can travel hundreds of miles, so it could be quite an adventure.<\/li>\n<li>On USGS topo maps, each square kilometer is outlined.\u00a0 Pick one of these, and spend a day exploring it.<\/li>\n<li>Visit a random intersection of integer degree latitude and longitude lines, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.confluence.org\/confluence.php?visitid=4615\">42\u00b0N 73\u00b0W<\/a>.\u00a0 Who would want to do that? <span class=\"statcolor\">12,832 so far with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.confluence.org\">Degree Confluence Project<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Why are these kinds of things interesting to me?\u00a0 I think it creates an opportunity to break away from my ordinary routine and thinking.\u00a0 Who knows what will happen en route or who I will meet?<\/p>\n<p>In October I have two weeks off.\u00a0 Maybe I&#8217;ll pick one of these &#8211; which one do you think I should do?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The other day my friend Barry and I went on a walk.\u00a0 At each intersection we flipped a coin.\u00a0 Heads meant we continued straight.\u00a0 Tails then we flipped again, and then heads was left, tails was right.
