{"id":47,"date":"2014-04-30T20:51:22","date_gmt":"2014-05-01T00:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sharett.org\/?p=47"},"modified":"2014-07-12T09:27:21","modified_gmt":"2014-07-12T13:27:21","slug":"mapping-my-city-with-open-street-map","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sharett.org\/?p=47","title":{"rendered":"Mapping my city with Open Street Map"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last few months I&#8217;ve been mapping the hiking trails and off street paths of my city, Northampton, Massachusetts, using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\" target=\"_blank\">Open Street Map<\/a>, a free world map that anyone can edit.\u00a0 My Sundays have often been going out hiking with friends in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/#map=14\/42.3232\/-72.6950\" target=\"_blank\">Sawmill Hills of Florence<\/a>, recording my tracks with a GPS.\u00a0 There are miles of paths and every time I go out I discover another new to me path heading off that I mark to map later.\u00a0 I especially enjoy walking through the hills to visit friends on the other side &#8211; walking through the woods to a fun destination is the best!<\/p>\n<p>My dream is be able to walk pretty much anywhere on trails and back roads.\u00a0 A couple of weeks ago I walked to my friend&#8217;s place in Huntington, Mass. on trails and back roads like this one, which is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/#map=15\/42.3094\/-72.8027\" target=\"_blank\">Spruce Hill Rd in Westhampton<\/a>.\u00a0 Just the kind of &#8220;road&#8221; I like:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/#map=15\/42.3094\/-72.8027\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sharett.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2014-04-16-12.54.28-e1398904536734-243x300.jpg\" alt=\"Spruce Hill Rd in Westhampton\" width=\"359\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sharett.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2014-04-16-12.54.28-e1398904536734-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/www.sharett.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2014-04-16-12.54.28-e1398904536734-832x1024.jpg 832w, https:\/\/www.sharett.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2014-04-16-12.54.28-e1398904536734.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/a>All that needs to happen for my dream to be realized is for the many trails and paths that already exist to be mapped &#8211; if you have a smart phone with a GPS in it (most do), you can explore the trails near you, and add them to Open Street Map.\u00a0 (For Android, you can use <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.google.android.maps.mytracks\" target=\"_blank\">My Tracks<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>P.S. 7\/12\/14: Since writing this post, I discovered the <a title=\"Strava heat map\" href=\"http:\/\/strava.github.io\/iD\/#background=Bing&amp;map=14.19\/-72.6955\/42.3283\">Strava heat map<\/a> of the Sawmill Hills.
